8 Going on 9

calulateWhat is it about 8 year olds (going on 9) that makes them so literal?  My son made a hand-colored card for my wife yesterday in honor of Mother’s Day.  He will be 9 in a month, and yet he’d written “Thank you for taking care of me for 8 years.”  I said to him he could make it better by writing “9 years” instead.  It would give her credit for the 11 months past 8 years.  He replied by saying:

“But it’s only been 8 years.”

I smiled, and explained, as a review of course for a 3rd grader, the concept of rounding up the nearest year.  I thought I was winning him over by explaining this so well.  Then I said: “So, as you can see, you could put 9 years there and still be honest and make mom feel even better for taking care of you all that time.”  His response?

“But I won’t be 9 for a month.”
