In fact, the children actually free God, who has been trapped inside a glass box while an angel named Metatron acted in his place. Metatron was a complete tyrant. The people from the Church in the trilogy were so blinded by fear (of going to Hell if they didn't obey) that they couldn't even see what it was they were following. Metatron is killed in the book when Lord Asriel (who represents Satan) and Mrs. Coulter (who represents the Church) join forces to save Lyra (who Metatron wants killed), and after a vicious fight, do defeat him, but both lose their lives in the process. That sums it up as best I can. It's quite a complicated story (and I was totally right!)-it is a story of Adam and Eve. It's also by far one of the best and most captivating books I've ever read. All 900 and something pages of it. I will say this...it's definitely one of the most captivating books I have ever read. As far as promoting atheism...I didn't take that from the trilogies at all. It's definitely about not having religion oppress a person and not having one view taking over the way everyone thinks. I'm going to write a blog entry about the books!JessicaWho also doesn't care for the door knockers :)  This is interesting because I just finished reading the Pullman trilogy!
