Creationism Collides With Scientism
There are scientistic fundamentalists, and they think and behave exactly like religious extremists. They’re just as irrationally attached to their point of view, just as absolutist, just as unable to consider opposing views calmly and reasonably, and just as sure that civilization and the planet can’t survive unless their version of reality is the prevailing one.
I have to say I appreciate this quote. I am a Christian but not a fundamentalist. I respect the study of science and it complements my world-view. I have run across vehement fundamental scientists (usually professed atheists) and they have less ground in fact than most cults who knock on my doors.

This is interesting because I just finished reading the Pullman trilogy! All 900 and something pages of it. I will say this…it’s definitely one of the most captivating books I have ever read. As far as promoting atheism…I didn’t take that from the trilogies at all. It’s definitely about not having religion oppress a person and not having one view taking over the way everyone thinks. I’m going to write a blog entry about the books!JessicaWho also doesn’t care for the door knockers :)
I can’t wait to read your blog post! What about the "subtle knife?" Is there a scene where the kids have to use it to "kill God?"
curious.
I haven’t had a chance to write it yet, so I’ll just try to answer that for you here :) The answer is no. In fact, the children actually free God, who has been trapped inside a glass box while an angel named Metatron acted in his place. Metatron was a complete tyrant. The people from the Church in the trilogy were so blinded by fear (of going to Hell if they didn’t obey) that they couldn’t even see what it was they were following. Metatron is killed in the book when Lord Asriel (who represents Satan) and Mrs. Coulter (who represents the Church) join forces to save Lyra (who Metatron wants killed), and after a vicious fight, do defeat him, but both lose their lives in the process.
That sums it up as best I can. It’s quite a complicated story (and I was totally right!)-it is a story of Adam and Eve. It’s also by far one of the best and most captivating books I’ve ever read.
I read your post and also enjoyed this comment. I wonder what that "escaping" God is supposed to represent? I’d bet it represents "truth" to Pullman and not an intelligent creator. I have to admit that I don’t have the interest to read the next 2 novels. For that reason I am very glad your posted the 411 on them. So many books to read! I am not as avid reader as you! Thanks for sharing your experience with these books. I am sure you have helped many people out already!
