“Good Luck Chuck,” Very Funny but Not for Kids

Good Luck ChuckSarah and I went to a wedding yesterday and had a few glasses of wine. With the kids at her mom’s we got the wild youthful inspiration to go see a movie . . . as she points out in my comments at times, we don’t get out nearly as much as we ought! At any rate, we spontaneously went from the wedding (which by the way was a beautiful Catholic wedding and we enjoyed it immensely) to the Victor Valley Mall where we checked out what was playing. After some discussion we both agreed on “Good Luck Chuck.” I had seen a few commercials showing that Jessica Alba was in it and it looked like a light romantic comedy. I was right about liking it, but “light” couldn’t be more opposite of this movie’s theme. Let me give you the review . . .

My Good Luck Chuck REVIEW:

Good Luck Chuck had my wife and I doubled over laughing at times. It also has a lot of cute “first date” type scenes that got us exchanging one liners like “remember?” etc. I like movies like that on dates. But the laughter and thoughtfulness take a far backseat to the RAW SEXUAL images and humor. THIS ONE IS NOT FOR KIDS UNDER 18. Actually, I do not know who I could wholeheartedly recommend this movie to. At one point Sarah said to me, “This is almost too much.” I totally agree, even though the scenes like that are very funny. In a way it is sad that the director had to sink so low to try and appeal. He’ll turn off a lot of the more conservative people because of those scenes. I think the basic storyline is strong enough to have made it without a bazillion humping sequences etc. (pardon my French).

The story is really really funny though. It’s about Chuck who gets a hex put on him in junior high by a goth girl he won’t kiss. In his adulthood he finds that the hex is that women will sleep with him once and then go on to marry the next guy. It had the potential to be truly thought provoking and teach us something about love. Instead, it is filled with a lot of 1-2 minutes gratuitous sex scenes one after the other. I write that just to warn you. They are short and usually really funny, but I would hate for a conservative type to think I am recommending this movie as wholesome. It is no more wholesome than “American Pie,” “There’s Something About Mary,” and flicks like those. I did like it though. We had a great time.

The humor is crass but it is SOOOO obviously reaching into the crass zone to get viewers that you can’t help but laugh. If this review sounds ridiculous to you, don’t go see it. On the other hand, if you want animal like LAUGHTER with your spouse over popcorn and a Coke (ironically the theater was full of teen singles in groups) I highly recommend that you check your moral compass at the door and just go in and have a good time. I wished I had a better movie to review, but like I said . . . with the wild life we live changing diapers and cleaning spitup off our shoulders, it’s not that often we get out. Good Luck Chuck gave some good laughs that felt like health to the bones!

I give Good Luck Chuck 3/5 stars. It would have been 5/5 if it weren’t for the over the top scenes I alluded to above. In my opinion they were funny and shocking but they just weren’t necessary to the plot.

Well, since I loved American Pie and There’s Something About Mary, I will definitely see this based on your review :) My hubby’s been wanting to see it, but I think that’s because they show Jessica Alba in her underwear on the commercials.  Once in a while, I enjoy a movie that is so over the top it’s funny–this sounds like the one!!
Glad you guys had a good time!
Jessica
