Humanity in Art
I love movies that shine a light on what it means to be human. I’m watching “City of Angels” right now and it is one of those types. A few others in this genre are:
- It’s a Wonderful Life
- What Dreams May Come
- Jack Frost
- The Terminator
- Ghost
- The Matrix
- A Beautiful Mind
- A River Runs Through it
These are just a few of the movies Hollywood has produced that try to show what it means to be human. Often it is a celebration, sometimes it is tragic and quite dark.
In some arenas of study, art kicks science’s ass. I think in the study of what it means to be human, the arts of movies, music, and plays come a lot closer to it than science and microscopes. Watching movies like “City of Angels” fill my heart with joy to have a chance at living! Not only that, but I get to help other people learn and grow through my job as a teacher. If there are any angels in my classroom, I am sure they are jealous just like Nicholas Cage’s character.
We humans have the last fair deal goin’ down: Life with free will and an ever revealing sense of the wonder it is to be human.
POSTSCRIPT: My wife Sarah just started a blog and she’s trying to get some readers and comments (we all remember how it was!). She’s got some cool insights and of course, I like her ;) If you have some time, head over and leave her a comment and maybe some helpful hint to get her going! Her blog is called: Party of Five

Damien, you are in trouble now. Sarah is quite capable as a blogger! Glad you are “9 feet” away so you two can type the responses without each other reaching for the delete key on the other’s blog, I know in our house, there would be times one or the other of us would be trying to get to the delete key before the other got to the send key… but then I know his password, so I have the upper hand. Now, if he just had more time to actually write!
I envy you that she has started. These past months Leon’s job has demanded too much of his attention.
I’m with you on the art vs. science. Beautiful Mind and Ghost are two of my favorites. I’m sure I’ve seen some of the others, but I usually toss titles out of my head and leave the storage of what I like to Leon.
Thanks Marcia! I’m glad she’s started on a journey as well!
