Over Here Practicing Thankfulness
I was a little disappointed today about something. Then I thought about it a different way. I realized that when things don’t go the way I want them to that it gives me an opportunity to grow and possibly discover a higher, better reality. In other words, I am not omniscient so I shouldn’t fixate on the way I see things.
The first two days of school have been absolutely amazing. In the years I have been teaching I have never felt so optimistic about things. Today we had an amazing hour and a half discussing the story “Akiak” about a husky dog in Alaska. We pulled down the map, I taught language concepts, and for that time it felt like exactly what teaching should be. I hope for more times like that. Those are the times that grow test scores! The more you have, the better the kids do on the state exam at the end of the race in May.
Sometimes our lives become something not of our design. This is okay. In fact, it’s the norm. Even when you see someone who has apparently “achieved all their goals” speaking to a group, they always say they had other plans for their life. I guess the trick to happiness is learning to live happily in your own skin and accept the lot you have. After all, everyone I know has a lot in one way or another. People are starving in Mexico and other countries around the world as we speak. Who am I to whine that some luxury item in my life didn’t come to pass. I think i’ll practice what I preach a little more these days and PRACTICE THANKFULNESS.
Tomorrow is Thursday. 2 days until the weekend. Slow and steady . . .

Great post, Damien… And to think you were able to practice thankfulness in spite of so little sleep from being awakened by your sweet little nocturnal (for now) daughter!
Thanks Marcia. I once heard this type of thinking referred to as: “An attitude of grattitude.” We don’t always get what we want, but the trick to happiness is wanting the things we have.
Yes, my daughter will grow through this! Meanwhile, I’m really not that tired surprisingly!
Really nice post, Damien! You are a better person that I am. I just wrote a post about how I can get even with Technorati for messing with my authority score once again :)
Of course, I wouldn’t actually DO any of those things….

Great post! I thought of you today because I’m having a 200th Post Giveaway, and truthfully, it’s been too long since I visited these parts. Where have I been? I love the new blog look. It looks great on you! I like the new pic of you and the wife too.
WOW! You said a dang mouthful and it was brimming with thankfulness. This is certainly a featured post on my sidebar.
Sometimes what and where life takes us can be surprising, but we must embrace it and look for the lessons. Being thankful can be a humbling place. Enjoy!
I like changing my theme weekly or so, I don’t fight it anymore ;) It’s more of a rotation than a new one. Thanks for the nice comment!
