So What do You Want on Your Tombstone?

No this isn’t a pizza commercial. Slevi posed an interesting question to readers and I liked the direction so I’m continuing the meme. It’s a great way to refocus your goals in life. By imagining the end we can do better NOW. I’m not tagging anyone as some might find this too personal. But if anybody that wants to try this meme, go for it, just credit Slevi’s post in yours. Here goes mine! There are two questions:

1) What would you like to be said about you at your funeral?

2) Think of a deceased loved one - what is the one thing you’ll remember the most about him/her?

As for #1, this is an interesting question. I think it morbid to fantasize about my own death, so I’m going to try and not do that. Instead, I will imagine what I would want my kids to remember about me and then translate that into a snippet on my tombstone:

Loving dad, disciplined artist, and student of life.

my tombstone (make your own tombstone)

As for #2, this one is easy. My grandpa died a week or so ago at 85. I will remember many things about him, he had a dramatic impact on my golf game and the formation of my personality. If I had to say one thing I will remember most about him it will be this statement (You have to be a golfer to understand it’s life application):

Keep your head down, take a big back-swing, and follow through.

I’ll never forget how proud he was of those Callaway irons. That’s how I teach, write, love, and live . . . thanks gramps for those early mornings at cherry hills. I’ll never forget that crisp cold air and the lessons I learned in your shadow those days.

To the reader: If you are interested out there in writing your ideas on these two questions, by all means give it a go. Do me a favor and let me know so I can read it. You can link to me which is a good way, or just leave a comment with a link to your post.

So sorry to hear about your grandfather. My son’s a golfer so I understand your grandpa’s sage advice.
You pay quite a tribute to him by stating in helped form your personality.
As for my tombstone, I think, "she always tried" would do it for me. Nothing like instilling a bit of guilt in the kids once I’m gone!
