8 Things I Wish I Knew When I Was in College

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Since Matt tagged me with a morph of my original meme, I figure I’d answer the tag with a morph once more ;)

8 Things I Wish I Knew When I Was In College.

  1. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to do great things at work.
  2. Be a listener or you will be disliked.
  3. Slow, measured actions beat quick, spur of the moment ones every time.
  4. Teaching pays very little in comparison to most other jobs you get student loans for.
  5. Most people around you have been through what you have been through, so don’t be afraid to talk about stuff.
  6. Dogs are just a long term handful.
  7. Kids are totally worth the stress, but they are a big stress. (and a lot of work)
  8. While gossip and naysaying at work may seem titillating and harmless at first, they can and will cause you much trouble if you let them into your life. Be the hoity-toity no-fun guy/gal who changes the subject.

Off the top of my head, there they are. Thanks Matt. Now for my willing victims (hopefullly!):

  1. [This Eclectic Life]
  2. [Life is RANTastic!]
  3. [MeeAugraphie]
  4. Some others I haven’t thought of . . . you know who you are!

Amazing Visions - Inspiring People and Things

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Imagine an idea so powerful that it produced billions of dollars every year, gave millions of people happiness every day, and became a culture unto itself? If you can’t imagine it, I’ll help you out: Disneyland.

Now imagine a movie that broke all rules and conventions which grossed more than any movie before or since and changed the world? Having trouble imagining? How about Star Wars.

-or-

How about serving more hamburgers and shakes than ever before and becoming the largest restaurant business in earth? okay, you guessed right . . . McDonalds. Wait until you hear the obstacles Ray Kroc overcame.

These visonaries were real people just like me and you. They used what they had to change their worlds and become monster successful. I wanted to see what makes people like this “tick” and I found out! Among other things I learned that each of these people suffered a gigantic rejection in their career. It didn’t stop them. Would you let that stop you?

Thoughts, visions, inventions like the ones these people had are what I’m interested in and I have written about them in a series of posts entitled: “Amazing Things.” Get ready for some real inspiration.

The Blog Carnival: “Amazing Vision” is published regularly through Blog Carnival.  To see the official page and/or submit your blog post, visit it here.

These Things I Know about Blogging

Monday, June 4th, 2007

I just finished capping a series of posts about blogging. It’s a long series, but it’s made of posts I thought were important to write along the way these past 7 months of serious blogging.

As I mention in some of the latter posts, I’ve discovered and decided I am not a profit motivated blogger. Of course it would be nice to sell something I created or advertise guitar lessons or something practical like that. On the other hand, I don’t like being tied down to one marketing niche in my blog. I am starting a second blog as we speak of teacher stories. I might explore monetizing that and blog a new series :) on what I learn about monetization, but for now I just have this series on getting the most out of personal blogging in a very confusing and sometimes even discouraging medium. I am excited about this series. I welcome your comments on all the the articles you feel you have a reaction to. thanks for reading, and have fun blogging!
