The BlogHop and the Crucial 10%
This past month I’ve been on a quest to find personal blogs similar to mine in their quest to share their lives through posts. I’ve discovered some truly amazing blogs in my travels . . . but I still think there’s something out there I haven’t uncovered yet. This may prove a fatalistic notion since there are millions of blogs out there. But are there really as many as people say? Check out this quotation from a blogging book I’m reading right now:1
As of mid-2006, depending on who you believe, there are anywhere between eight and and thirty million lurking about the web according to a recent study by Technorati (www.technorati.com), around 100,000 new blogs are created daily, making for a doubling of the blogosphere every five months.
On the same page, it goes on to say:
Jason Calacanis, founder of Weblogs Inc., estimates that less than 10% of blogs are updated regularly.
So, among the tens of millions of blogs out there you must hunt a bit for the live ones! I don’t know about you, but it makes me a feel a bit encouraged about blogging to know that instead of being one in 75 million, I’m likely on in 7.5 and of that I am of a smaller percentage of personal blogs that are frequently updated! Rose at World Outside my Window gave me some great advice to find new personal blogs. She said “Blog Hopping,” following the blogrolls of your favorite reads, has produced more for her than the services extant. Her finding is the same as mine! The best way to get out there and find the best blogs is to blog hop. And, based on the findings above, I’ll be sorting through chaff by checking the date of the most recent posts! How recent is recent to you?

yeah, if it’s been updated in the last month I will stay if it grabs my interest.
I’m gonna get Lorelle’s book, I am sure it’s amazing. She has a way with words.
I have to make blogrolls now that I have gone to Wordpress. But honestly, I rarely look at the blogrolls. You get a better idea of who is current by clicking on comments links in someone’s blog you read. If they are commenting on other blogs, they are probably blogging. I found some interesting blogs like that.
That’s a great point Marcia. That would definitely fall under the name of “Blog Hopping.” I do that too.
Starting a blog: Pretty easy.
Maintaining a blog: Not so easy.
Remembering that it’s there, keeping a sort of mental notepad in your head for the next post, and writing the post: fun, but it’s a task.
Right! Answering your question:
“Recent” varies. I was updating daily, until I saw how much time that was taking.
Now, it’s as I’ve got something to say, which can be anywhere from several times a day to once a month or so, depending on which of my blogs I’m talking about - and what has happened recently.
As far as what I think is ‘recent’ for other blogs, that depends heavily on the topic.
