In the late 70’s/early 80’s when I was a kid, common kid slang for expressing you liked something was to say the word “Awesome!” You won’t hear this word as much today in 2007. It’s been replaced. Language is an organic system that mutates fast at times, and other times incrementally slow. “Tight” is the new awesome and it snuck in without rhyme, reason or explanation. the kids nowadays in grade school into middle school use “tight” to show they like something. Are they referring to a tight bedspread? Where do new terms come from? The other day I asked one of my students if he liked our new awesome textbooks. He said in reply, “Yeah Mr. Riley they are tight!” These word evolutions fascinate me. As a teacher, I work to learn and use student vernacular. Using the slang of a demographic gets you “in” with the natives and in my case, gets them to open their minds to learning.
