What Does Your Name Google?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe via rss -or- inspiration, psychology, blogging

Almost half of all U.S. Internet users (47%) have searched for information about themselves online, up from 22% in 2002, according to a report released yesterday by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. This self-searching is a natural outgrowth of the transition into the Web 2.0 era of participatory media, said Mary Madden, a senior research specialist and one of the authors of the study, “Digital Footprints: Online Identity Management and Search in the Age of Transparency.”

Wow, only 47%!  That’s quite shocking to me.  I regularly vanity google, because I want to try and determine my own internet profile as much as possible.  I’m hoping to become an academic, and I know from experience that when you go for a job, or present a paper or put a piece forward for publication, your name will be googled.  To my mind, you need to know what they’re going to find.  This is one of the main reasons why I don’t go in for anonymous blogging either.

Hi Amy!  That’s kind of scary to think that employers (academic that is) will Google your name.  What if they confuse your listing with a serial killer of the same name??? LOL.

That’s why you need a digital resume updated and on hand.  I used to use Yahoo! Hot Jobs and then i stole their template and just started keeping my own.  Don’t get me wrong, I plan to retire teaching elementary school as I do now in about 20 years give or take … but there are always those little side jobs like part time college teaching or freelance writing where it’s great to just shoot a resume out on demand.  I suppose if you don’t then you are victim to what they find on Google ;)

I’ve googled my entire family among others. I discovered a charity I donated to had published my address. That didn’t make me happy, back then, but I don’t live there anymore.  Amy had a point about seeing what is out there.

An online resume is a great idea for you "young ones" who still choose to work for a living!

PS. I read your post card at the bottom, cool idea.  It is raining there? You don’t get much rain, do you?

I thought it was rain, turns out it was wind and my dog scratching on the stucco outside.  Thanks for noticing the Twitter postcard down below :)
